Call for Papers
You are cordially invited to participate in an International Conference entitled:
The Jewish Communities of Latin America
To take place on Monday-Thursday, 16-19 Ellul, 5772 (3-6 September, 2012)
The conference will take place at the University of São Paulo, Brazil in cooperation with Ashkelon Academic College
The Conference will cover a variety of topics, including:
• From the Old World to the New World: Migration to Latin America and settlement there
• Relations among the communities of Latin America, and with other Diaspora communities
• Religious texts in Hebrew and other languages
• Jewish education and maintaining Jewish identity
• Relations between Jews and the surrounding society
• Intellectual writings
• Jewish artists and Jewish art
• Leadership and community organization
• New research perspectives on the Jews of Latin America in general, and on individual communities in particular
• Economic life
• Rabbis and the Rabbinate
• Changes in the status of women
• Philanthropy
• Zionist activity and Aliya to Israel
• Jews in politics and social movements
• Youth movements
Researchers are invited to submit a proposal for a paper, accompanied by a one-page abstract. The abstract may be submitted in one of the following four languages: Hebrew/Spanish/English/Portuguese
Proposals on topics not listed above will also be considered.
Final date for proposal submission is Monday, 8 Iyar, 5772 (30/04/2012).
